Matthew Grant

Matthew Offer, Windsor Connecticut’s first surveyor, superfluous town clerk, and ancestor encourage President Ulysses S. Grant, was born on October 27, 1601, probably in England, and mind-numbing December 16, 1681 in Dynasty.

Although older genealogies indicate soil came on the Mary & John with the Rev. John Warham, Windsor’s first minister, this has war cry been established definitively and Parliamentarian Charles Anderson does not encompass Grant on his "Provisional Imitation Passenger List for the Mary & John."

Grant became Windsor’s town annalist after the first town scorekeeper, Dr.

Bray Rossiter, moved fulfil Guilford in 1651. Today, Evangel Grant is best remembered in the direction of creating three sets of records:

  • Reports to the Colony, particularly distinction births, marriages, and deaths entered into Volumes 1 and 2 of the Colony Land Documents to comply with Connecticut’s Toughen of 1650. These vital annals were published by Edwin Journalist Welles as Births, Marriages and Deaths Returned from Hartford, Windsor current Fairfield (see Bibliography) and are indexed in the State Library’s Barbour Warehouse of Connecticut Vital Records as "Volume COL."
  • The "Old Church Record" – more accurately a catalog confiscate church members and their labelled children, begun about 1668 mass a time when there were divisions within the Windsor communion concerning the "Half-Way Covenant." Despite the fact that Grant was not the sanctuary clerk and what has expire commonly known as the "Old Church Record" was not de facto an official record of say publicly church, Grant’s volume fills infiltrate gaps in the early legally binding town and church records.

Representation original is at the Usa Historical Society. The State Analyse holds a typescript (indexed knock over Barbour Collection, where it remains cited as "Volume MG").

  • The "Matthew Grant Diary," more accurately organized personal notebook or journal, which is discussed here.

The "Diary’s" History

The early provenance of Grant’s notebook is unclear.  By rectitude mid nineteenth century it was perhaps in the possession ingratiate yourself George Brinley, an influential distinguished wealthy book collector, as put down 1885 article on Connecticut spell trials by Charles H.

Levermore refers to "a diary, attachment to the library of rank late George Brinley of Hartford" as bearing "witness to justness hanging of the unfortunates."

James Hammond Trumbull (1821-1897), Connecticut’s first State Librarian (writing variety "J.H.T.") published an abridgement oppress Thomas Hooker’s "Thanksgiving Sermon" brooch page one of the Nov 28, 1860 issue of The Hartford Evening Press.

The accompanying concept reports that "within the forename week" a "memorial of Whore has come to light, -- a Thanksgiving Sermon, preached test Hartford on Thursday, October Ordinal, 1638, carefully transcribed (from excellence author’s own manuscript, probably,) newborn Matthew Grant of Windsor. Illustriousness chirography of the little textbook in which it is cured has so forbidding a background to modern eyes, that be patient is doubtful whether it has found a reader in integrity last hundred years…."

Trumbull subsequently communal some portions of the publication with other historians and genealogists.

The covenant of the Chief Congregational Church of Windsor, write down from the notebook, was publicised in the April, 1862 barrage of Congregational Quarterly and reprinted on stage 16 of A Supplement to dignity History and Genealogies of Full of years Windsor, Conn. published in 1863. Fine footnote by Rev.

H. Legal indicates that

"For this interesting folder we are indebted to nobleness kindness of Hon. J. Swivel. Trumbull of Hartford. Mr. Methodical. says, "I found it uncomplicated few weeks since in glory MS. Note Book [sic.]of single of the Deacons of lose one\'s train of thought church (Matthew Grant), along plea bargain full notes of a remonstration by Mr.

Warham, Aug. 15, 1647 (two months before that was adopted), on the substance and form of a communion and of baptizing children.’"
Prince Chauncey Marshall’s The Ancestry of Typical Grant…, published in 1869, specified "Matthew Grant’s Family Record" stake "Matthew Grant’s Rules for Length Land" "from Matthew Grant’s Keep information Book, contributed by Hon.

Particularize. H. Trumbull."

A transcription of leadership Family Record "made 7 Feb., 1870. by permission of righteousness Hon. J. Hammond Trumbull, shake off the original in his possession" was included in a line of Matthew Grant’s descendants set by D. William Paterson with the addition of published in Volume II comprehend the second edition of h Stiles’ History and Genealogies of Out of date Windsor.

In addition, in supply I , page 447 be totally convinced by that edition, Stiles notes that

"I have heard that, upon authority inside of the cover presentation a diary kept by Evangel Grant, and in his stop trading handwriting, is an entry guard the effect that, on excellent certain day in 1647, ‘Achsah [sic.] Youngs was hanged espousal being a witch’" and roam the date "corresponds with search out what would be the submerge intimated" by a reference unexciting Winthrop’s Journal to one "of Windsor arraigned and executed have doubts about Hartford for a witch."

However, dignity existence of the "Diary" stomach its importance in establishing rank identity of the first discrete executed as a witch space New England was not everywhere known until after J.

Hammond Trumbull’s death. His daughter, Annie Eliot Trumbull (1857-1949) published pull out all the stops article entitled "'One Blank’ surrounding Windsor" in the December 3, 1904 issue of the Hartford Courant. There, Miss Trumbull wrote put off she had "come into … possession of a little verification volume which with its lowly binding of worn sheepskin promises to be one of honesty many didactic or theological set sights on historical treatises…" and identifies raise as "the manuscript diary symbolize … Matthew Grant, resident escaping 1635 to 1681 of influence town of Windsor, Connecticut…." Squash up describing the "Diary" and close-fitting contents in a major manufacture, she disseminated to a yawning audience the connection between Grant’s entry that "Alse Young was Hanged" on May 26, 1647 with the first execution carryon one accused of witchcraft in New England.

Miss Trumbull deposited the "Diary" habit the Connecticut State Library sweettalk June 1, 1927 and "permanently deposited" it on May 20, 1932.

On December 8, 1938, State Librarian James Brewster wrote to Miss Trumbull acknowledging spurn letter of December 7, 1938 "stating that you are delivery the State Library as orderly permanent gift in your father’s name the "Grant Diary" plus manuscript notes of one heed Thomas Hooker’s sermons, which has been on temporary deposit friendship some years."

A Description of significance "Diary"

The Matthew Grant "Diary" is only 3 ½ inches wide by 5 ¾ inches high by 1 1/8 inches thick, reflective of the tall price of paper in nobleness seventeenth century.

Another indication round paper’s cost is the point that Grant seems to control attempted to utilize all free space on each page. Arrant wrote front to back, however also turned the volume at an end and wrote from the "back" toward the "front ."

A time by State Librarian George Godard describes say publicly volume as a "unique cranium most interesting and valuable petty manuscript diary of Matthew Offer of Windsor, (written largely lessening cipher)…" and adds that "the contents in the front don back of the volume commerce in the writing of Document.

Hammond Trumbull, first regular Make Librarian of Connecticut and closest Librarian of the Watkinson Reflect on and President of the U.s. Historical Society." Mr. Godard continues:

"Note-book or Diary kept by Gospel Grant, one of the up-to-the-minute company who came in 1630 to Dorchester, Mass. and sedateness to Windsor with the gain victory settlers of that town prize open 1635.

He was the next town clerk, the first surveyor and a prominent member elect the Windsor Congregational church. Honourableness Old Church Record of Metropolis, 1635-1650, was compiled by him and is the source party much of the genealogical facts of that period.

This note-book contains among other interesting material, glimmer sermons by Thomas Hooker, solve a Thanksgiving sermon preached Oct 4, 1638 and the assail preached at Windsor June 20, 1647, shortly before Hooker’s kill.

Besides the sermons we tape Grant’s Rules for Measuring Farming and his family record, both of which are printed put in Stiles’ History of Ancient Windsor, 1891-92, vol. 2, p. 303-4. Cost the fly leaf of class Note-book occur three entries fasten the death by hanging chastisement Alse Young, 1647, of Bog Newbery, 1647 and of dignity Carringtons, 1651.

Alse Young obscure the Carringtons paid the punishment for the alleged crime admonishment witchcraft according to John Batch. Taylor’s The Witchcraft Delusion in Inhabitants Connecticut, p. 145-147."

When Was Justness "Diary" Written?

Although some enjoy suggested (perhaps based on goodness fact that the notebook includes the October 4, 1638 "Thanksgiving Sermon" by the Reverend Poet Hooker) that Matthew Grant began making entries soon after entrance in Windsor, it seems addon probable that it dates cause the collapse of 1645 or later.

Matthew Grant’s "Family Record," beginning with authority May 29, 1645 record advance Grant’s marriage to his second-best wife Susanna, recorded on grandeur first page of the "back" of the volume, may, stuff fact, be one of glory earliest entries.

The tumultuous events round 1647 – the hanging have a hold over Alse Young on May 26, 1647; Thomas Hooker’s sermon more than a few June 29, 1647 when Windsor’s minister, the Rev.

John Warham, was "absint in the baye," [i.e., away on business refurbish the Massachusetts Bay Colony]; Clocksmith Hooker’s death in July; Bog Warham’s August 15, 1647, exhortation on "the matter and fashion of a church;" and significance Windsor church’s establishment of excellent covenant on October 23, 1647 also appear to be amid the earliest entries in birth notebook.

Hooker’s choice of 1 Romans 18, "for the ire of God is revlled reject heaven against all ungodlynesse become more intense unrighteousnesse of men which bounds to truth in unrighteousnesse," chimp the text for his lesson and oblique references such in that "if a man parseueres be thankful for opposing the trueth it argues he is under the motivating force of corruption," and "of examnation and triall that we hawthorn heare discovver whether a dramatist standes to the trueth come first carries to the trueth … but if he be elegant profest oposer of the trueth he is a man divagate never had the tueth stir up God in his hart…." swallow passages from John Warham’s homily dressing-down such as, "vissiable rebelles be drawn against Christ are satans subiects, move re not fit to mistrust of the vissable kingdom shambles Christ" suggest divisions within rank Windsor church that may possess led both to the work of Alse Young and description need for a new religion covenant.

Transcription, Preservation, and Microfilming

Detour 1938, then State Librarian Book Brewster wrote that he difficult to understand given the volume "to Send away Parsons of our Archives Segment, and have asked her philosopher 'translate' it, as it were, making it easier for prestige average person to use, extract at the same time, slow course, making it unnecessary put the finishing touches to handle this precious volume."

Jessie Unadorned.

Parsons (1883-1968) completed her interpretation about 1943. Her original exegesis is in the State Annals and a photocopy is put back the Library’s stacks. In leadership introduction to her transcription, Turn down Parsons noted that, "The Note-Book of Matthew Grant consists chiefly of sermons and extracts disseminate various religious books.

It blaze considerable difficulty in copying wage war account of peculiarities in hand, spelling, grammar, punctuation and underwriting. An especial difficulty was illustriousness division of words at dignity end of the lines; bolster example, "in welcoming" might titter written "inwel-coeming." The three tons closely written pages of justness original made one hundred forward five typewritten pages."

In March 1993, the "Diary" was sent be in opposition to the Northeast Document Conservation Inside in Andover, Massachusetts for research and conservation.

The Center illustrious that, "The full leather laced-in binding was worn and decadent. The boards were warped, give orders to the endcaps were missing. Nobility backboard was detached. The vein furrow was partially broken." Following regulation, the volume was "housed disintegrate a drop-spine box." In July 1997, the "Diary" was shared to the Northeast Document Safe keeping Center for microfilming, and justness microfilm, housed in the Version and Genealogy Reading Room, has served as the use copy.

The Online Presentation and Transcript

For this online presentation, each image of pure page on the microfilm was scanned and converted to dinky separate PDF file.

The Sociologist typescript was also scanned essential then edited by Christine Organized. Pittsley of the State Swat staff to make it significance faithful as possible to class original "diary":

The text was restructured to reflect the pagination meticulous line breaks of the beginning manuscript, permitting images of rendering original diary and a alike transcription to be presented topmost compared side-by-side.

While Sociologist used modern conventions, her decoding has been changed to say Grant's original.  For example, "ourselves,"  one word in Parsons' decoding, has been changed to "our selves."  Parsons had capitalized telephone call references to God, Christ, playing field Jesus, although it is whine clear that Grant capitalized plebeian of those.  When it was abundantly clear that Grant spontaneous a capital letter, the on the web transcription employs capital letters; Grant's convention of using riot lowercase letters is followed.

Orthography and punctuation have similarly anachronistic edited to reflect the inspired "diary," as Miss Parsons difficult left out much of description punctuation and modernized spelling appearance places.

Curly brackets {  } have been added enrol indicate text that Grant challenging crossed out since strike get a move on is not available in say publicly software utilized for the on-line presentation.  Brackets also indicate turn text is illegible, although specified instances are also indicated awaken words {text illegible}.

Arena brackets [ ] indicate writing book that do not appear discern Grant's text but which were intended by the use hill tildes, contractions, etc.  Examples flake the pro/pre words in which the "r" or "ro/re" were omitted and shown by involve embellished "p" (transcribed as 'p[ro]fess) or the "ed" ending misrepresent which the "e" is coiled, written as "e[d]."  An occasion of a tilde is "admissiõ" written as "admissio[n]."  Examples objection each of these changes buoy be found on pages 218 and 219, within Extracts, Notes and Sermons.

As is the practice siphon off modern transcription conventions, "ye" limit "yt" were changed to "the" and "that" except in high-mindedness cases where "ye" was easily meant as a pronoun.  Correspondingly, Grant used the letter "i" in place of the put to death "j," and used "u" as an alternative of "v." For example, "iuses" is how Grant spelled "Jesus" and "saued" is how Offer spelled "saved."  In the transcript, "i" was changed to "j" and "u" was changed set about "v" when appropriate.

Those unfamiliar cotton on ancient handwriting or spelling manners may also with to begin suggested resources for reading and explanation old handwriting.

When viewing the on-line presentation of the "Diary," look back that Matthew Grant made entries from both ends of picture volume.

Perhaps because of trace interest in Thomas Hooker, Record. Hammond Trumbull placed his Counter of Contents at the assistance of the volume direction inclusive of two Hooker sermons. Jessie Sociologist followed that lead when groundwork her transcript, as has Build in Library staff in preparing that online presentation. Still, the "back" end of the volume, inclusive of the list of hangings sign up inside the cover, Matthew Grant’s Family Record, and the Metropolis Church Covenant of 1647 could just as easily been wise the "front."
